"Big horns, deep bass grooves, tight guitar riffs, sometimes a piano, sometimes an organ, always soul."
The Miami sound was a fusion of soul, jazz, funk, reggae and calypso. Local contributors to the Miami sound included Helene Smith, considered Miami’s first lady of soul, Betty Wright, Gwen McCrae, Sam & Dave, Clarence Reid, Willie “Little Beaver” Hale, Them Two, Joey Gilmore, and Timmy Thomas. Other big name talents like BB King, Harry Belafonte, and Ray Charles fled to Overtown to catch the wave.
